E Pluribus Unum (Fred Wilson)
Architectural rendering of the proposed project by Fred Wilson.
NEW DEVELOPMENTS REGARDING THE PROJECT'S PROPOSED LOCATION: Click here for the news release.
Fred Wilson first earned prominence as an artist by “mining” museum collections and repurposing often-overlooked artifacts to present new perspectives and context, frequently from an African-American perspective. Entitled E Pluribus Unum (Out of Many, One), the proposed project for the Cultural Trail is Wilson's first "mining" of public monuments in order to create a new permanent public art installation.
For E Pluribus Unum, Wilson has digitally 3D-scanned the Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument sculpture
of the freed, unknown African American man located on the west side of the monument. Wilson proposes to recreate him in Indiana
limestone (like the original), and to present him in the City-County
Building's prominent front plaza in a more upright position. Instead of clenching his fist around
shackles, the figure will be holding a flag of Wilson's design
representing the African diaspora. The base will be granite and will
contain a seating element so as to mirror the overall site design of the
City-County Building's civic plaza.
